How to Care for Combination Skin

If you have combination skin you will find that certain areas of your skin gets oilier than others, for instance your t-zone including forehead and nose, whilst other areas of your face are drier. My skin is exactly that… Though because of the distribution of the oil secreting glands we all have combination skin. Read on for my tips, skincare routine and product recommendations for combination skin.

1. Opt for a Gentle Cleanser

Use a gentle cleanser morning and night to remove impurities and help balance skin. My go-to cleanser for the past few years has been Sukin’s Foaming Facial Cleanser. Sukin is an Australian brand which I discovered in TKmaxx - I was drawn to one of their core values - skincare that doesn’t cost the earth. This gentle cleanser is formulated with soothing ingredients like chamomile, aloe vera and green tea. It cleanses and removes dirt and makeup without drying your skin out - perfect for combination skin!

2. Exfoliate

Exfoliating with a face scrub helps remove dead skin cells. Some say you are meant to exfoliate once or twice a week and even daily to remove dead skin and excess sebum build up. I exfoliate three times a week and sometimes more (especially in the warmer months).

Also, I’ve tried many scrubs but the one I always reach for is Palmer’s Cocoa Butter Gentle Exfoliating Facial Scrub. You may know Palmer’s for their Cocoa Butter Original Solid Jar but they do great face care too! This face scrub contains ethically and sustainably sourced cocoa butter as well as crushed walnut and cocoa powder. Plus, the texture is super fine and not harsh on my skin (hence why I use it frequently) and leaves my skin feeling smooth.

3. Use a Face Mask Weekly

I love a good face mask! I usually use Aztec Secret Indian Healing Clay (mixed with pure organic apple cider vinegar and a little water). Aztec Indian Healing Clay is 100% natural calcium bentonite clay, when applied to the skin you do feel pulling and tighting as it dries and deeply cleanses the pores. This is a firm fave because as much as I am a product junkie, I enjoy mixing up my own products too, better yet it always leaves my skin feeling refreshed.

4. Moisturise

Use a light water based moisturiser with hyaluronic acid to boost moisture and radiance. My go-to facial moisturiser lately has been the Palmer’s Coconut Oil Formula Coconut Water Facial Moisturiser and it is life, yes life! The Palmer’s Coconut Water Facial Moisturiser has a velvety gel like consistency and as you warm up the product in your hands and apply it to your face the natural oils are released. This facial moisturiser also smells lush but not overpowering.

5. Apply Sunscreen

I find in the cooler months I don’t use a specific suncreen as my foundation has SPF15 added but in the warmer months I do use a specific broad spectrum sunscreen. I’ve incorporated Ren Clean Screen Mineral SPF 30 Mattifying Face Sunscreen* into my routine recently and apply it a bit like I would apply a primer as it creates a matt effect especially when focused on my t-zone due to the naturally derived zinc oxide in the formula.

6. Use a Facial Oil at Night

Sounds strange to apply an oil if areas of your face can get oily but trust me you can still use an oil if you have combination skin! Light oils help balance oil production and won’t clog pores. At night I apply a few drops of oil in place of my facial moisturiser after cleansing. I use either pure organic sweet almond oil or Palmer’s Coconut Oil Facial Oil which has 10 pure oils, including coconut and grapeseed oils. In winter, I mix a facial oil with a facial moisturiser for added nourishment.

There you have it my skincare routine, tips for combination skin and the products I usually reach for.
Don’t forget it's important to look after your skin from the inside too (not just topically) with nutritious food and regular exercise as these too will also help keep your skin balanced, healthy and glowing!

Have you tried any of these products? What’s your skin type and usual skincare routine? I’d love to know in the comments.
