Five ways to help beat the winter blues
The winter months can feel a bit meh but brighter days are on the way! In the meantime here are my five top tips to help beat winter blues...
1 - Sign up to a challenge
I've always found a health and fitness challenge helps boost my energy levels especially in the winter. I took part in the Detox and Discipline challenge by BeulahDavina recently. The Detox and Discipline challenged involved giving up added sugar, ultra processed foods (UPFs) and alcohol, exercising daily for at least 30 minutes, drinking 2 to 3 litres of water daily and breaking the workout or diet rule once during the challenge. This gave me a boost and left me feeling more energised and I plan to stick to the rules going forward. There are plenty more challenges coming up too like 62 miles in March for Diabetes UK, 10K steps for Cancer Research, Squat Challenge for Macmillian and 8K a day for Tommy's.
2 - Journal
I love a good journal and find that writing things down helps me keep on top of things and form a plan for all that I want to do and breaking them down into daily, weekly and monthly tasks. The journal that I am using this year is the Kitchnoir annual planner. A good planner for me has space for trackers, key dates, space for a brain dump and motivational quotes and the Kitchnoir has exactly that.
3 - Take your vitamins daily
In winter months here in the UK we don't get much sun light and Vitamin D aka the sunshine vitamin is crucial for helping boost immunity, maintaining bone health and muscles. I’ve been reaching for Vitl Vitamin D3 supplement over the past few months because
Vitl Vitamin D3 supplement is an easy to swallow soft gel, each with 1000 iu and is vegan friendly and would highly recommend them. Vitamin D3 is the type of vitamin D which our produces when exposed to sunlight and we cannot get this from our diet (only vitamin D2) hence the need for taking a Vitamin D3 supplement in the grey winter months.
Since taking Vitl Vitamin D3 along with my personalised Vitl vitamins and eating well balanced I'm feeling more energised overall.
4 - Exercise
It's important to keep your body moving always. Be it a run, walk, yoga, weight training etc it's vital for overall health and helps beat the winter blues too.
Walking has been my go to exercise of late as my body recovers from carrying and birthing a whole baby for the second time. I think walking is massively underrated. It's great for getting your steps in, fresh air and overall wellness.
5 - Eat well
Eating well helps boost your mood, sleep, skin and hair health. I had gestational diabetes so I've been maintaining a healthier and balanced diet since. The Detox and Discipline challenge together with weekly deliveries of Riverford Organic Fruit and Veg and digging into my healthy recipes archive supports this massively.
