The Best Hair Oils for 4C Natural Hair

Oils are a major key in any natural hair regimen. Hair oils help boost shine and impart essential nutrients to hair and scalp. They also help seal in gaps in the hair cuticle by providing a protective layer and so help prevent damage and boost hair's defence against heat and styling.

Whether you choose to use hair oils as a prepoo (pre-shampoo treatment), sealant or shine booster, read on for some of my favourite hair oils for 4c natural afro hair and how to make the most out of your hair oils to help boost overall hair health.

The Best Hair Oils for 4C Natural Hair

Mielle Organics Mint Almond Oil

This hair oil is a holy grail, it's lightweight with a refreshing minty scent. Mielle Organics Mint Almond Oil works perfectly as prepoo, as the oil in the L.O.C. (liquid, oil, cream)/L.C.O. (liquid, cream, oil) method and for braid out and twist out take down as it doesn't leave hair feeling greasy.

I've shared my thoughts on Mielle Organics Mint Almond Oil previously in my washday post, best products for natural hair and a review of the Mielle Organics TreasuresTress box takeover box.

Palmer’s Natural Fusions Ceramide Monoi Hair Food Oil

Next up, Palmer's Natural Fusions Ceramide Monoi Hair Food Oil which reminds me of Mielle Organics Mint Almond Oil. A little goes a long way with this oil as it is infused with a blend of oils such as monoi, argan, avocado, shea and coconut oils as well as hydro-ceramides. I love the application nozzle as it helps control oil flow to the hair and scalp.

Flora & Curl Superfruit Hair Oil

A blend of 10 oils including Avocado, Papaya, Watermelon and Jojoba, Flora & Curl Superfruit Hair Oil is non-greasy and the pump application is a lovely idea - no slippery hands when trying to hold the bottle during styling! The oil has a lovely citrus fragrance and isn't overpowering. Plus, you don't need a lot to get the job done.

Sunny Isle Extra Dark Jamaican Black Castor Oil

Lastly, Sunny Isle Extra Dark Jamaican Black Castor Oil (JBCO) is in my opinion the G.O.A.T. for helping to nourish and stimulate hair growth but also adds shine and helps with thickness. I like the scent as it reminds me of making JBCO with my grandma during my childhood in Jamaica. JBCO a great sealing oil and when my hair is in need of extra love I always reach for this especially now I've been experiencing postpartum shedding.

How to Use Hair Oils on Natural Hair for Optimal Hair Health:

  1. Use hair oils as a Prepoo before shampooing to help protect hair during the washing process. Warm the oil and apply to dry hair and leave on for at least 15 minutes before you shampoo.

  2. Superboost your conditioner or deep conditioner with a few drops of hair oil for added nourishment.

  3. On damp hair, use a hair oil in your LOC (liquid, oil, cream) or LCO (liquid, cream, oil) method to help seal in moisture.

  4. On dry hair, apply a few drops of hair oil to boost shine.

  5. You can also apply carrier oils with essential oils like peppermint and tea tree oil to your scalp to help boost circulation and decongest the scalp.

I hope you found this post useful! Have you tried any of these hair oils? Do you have any other tips for using hair oils? Let me know in the comments.
